New Vegetarian/Vegan Guesthouse in France

July 11, 2017

La Maison d’en Bas is a recently-restored guest-house, located in the village of Etsaut, approximately 50 metres from the central village square and 50 metres from la Maison du Parc (information centre for the Pyrenees National Park). All food is vegetarian (with vegan options available): breakfast and evening meals are served in the dining room on the ground floor, or if the weather allows, guests can also eat their meals in the back garden. Paul, the proprietor, is an experienced cook, with extensive experience of vegetarian and vegan cookery.

Etsaut is a sleepy village, situated on the East bank of the Aspe River.  It has about 70 full-time residents. Its position is unique inasmuch as it is on the crossing point of two major walking routes: the ancient pilgrimage route known as the Camino de Santiago de Compostela (which follows the valley from North to South), and the GR10 long-distance footpath (which stretches from West to East, from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean coasts). Consequently, in the summer months, it is an important stopping point for both for pilgrims and for hikers and climbers. In the main village square, there is a café-bar, which is open every day from 7.30am, which also has a small grocery shop attached to it. There is also a weekly (Summer) market. On the other side of the river, about 10 minutes walk from Etsaut, is the medieval village of Borce, which also has similar facilities.
